I really do sympathise with those poor celebrity types – they get invited to a glittering event such as the Oscars and then royally mess it up by picking the worst designer dress the world has ever witnessed, leading to a backlash of astonishing proportions from the media and we here at Secret Sales HQ.
But if you’re heading to a swanky event in the next few weeks, one top designer clothing guru has proffered her top tips on how to avoid a red carpet fashion disaster.
Hilary Alexander, the fabulous fashion director over at the Telegraph, says that first of all, it’s important to avoid a bulging cleavage that is created by a dress that’s too small – note to self to avoid purchasing designer dresses that seem like a bargain, despite being two sizes too small then.
It seems simple, but look in the mirror, she advises: "It’s amazing how many stars wear dresses which appear to be a perfect fit from the front, but are a disaster when viewed from the rear."
Also, make sure you carry a little compact so that you can check your makeup in natural light – no-one wants to be looking like an oompa loompa at an important event.
And finally, Hilary suggests that if you have a fabulous new pair of designer shoes, please practice walking in them before you leave the house – while I’m sure many of you will be aiming for a dramatic look, picking yourself up off the pavement after coming a cropper in your Jimmy Choo’s is a bit too far in my book.
I will certainly be keeping my eye on Oscar nominee and Secret Sales favourite Carey Mulligan at Sunday’s (March 7th) event, she’s sure to score high in the fashion stakes.
Who do you think will pull out all the stops at the Oscars?
