I absolutely love designer handbags. They are my biggest luxury purchase and the larger the better! However, my new Mulberry tote bag is huge and because I can fit so much stuff in it I tend to carry around more than is necessary!
But I do know that this is something I need to pay more attention to. Once on a shopping trip in Edinburgh my handbag became so heavy it gave me a trapped nerve in my neck!
So, how can we make sure we can still wear our huge designer bags with pride, without ending up on the physio table?
A spokesperson from the British Chiropractic Association advised women to "only carry the essentials with you" and to keep your handbag "as light as possible".
"I would say that a handbag that you can carry evenly over both shoulders is better," he added.
Or "a bag that you can carry across your body", as it is best to keep its weight as close as possible to your body’s centre of gravity.
Debenhams recently revealed that handbags typically weigh 57 per cent less than they did two years ago – and the store puts this down to gadgets getting smaller and weighing less.
On average, a woman’s bag now weighs around 1.5 kg.
Are you guilty of carrying too much in your handbag?

As a pilates instructor I totally understand the Chiropractors view and agree that yes a lighter bag or a ruck sack would be better for the health of our backs and posture. HOWEVER, lets face it, what girl is going to choose a ruck sack over the latest Anya no matter how heavy? I prefer to teach my students to stand straight, tall and to draw their shoulders back and down to engage their stabilizers. This will enable them to carry the latest bag pain free and with styles.

I can vouch that this has happened to me. I was carrying around very heavy handbag packed to the brim with books, makeup, water, etc. and it caused me back problems worthy of going to the chiropractor. My spine actually began to curve and pinched a nerve in my lower back which made it my legs numb. After some treatment, that all went away and I do try to swap shoulders from now on when I carry a bag but, let’s be honest, I’m always going to put more than I should in my bag.
