We here at Secret Sales HQ all love our favourite designers, from Dior and Chloe to Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen – and I’m sure that you guys feel the same. But don’t you ever fancy trying your hand at being the clothes creator from time to time? I know I do. And there is nothing more empowering – as a fashionista – to take a boring old high street staple and turn it into your own piece of custom-made designer clothing.
I’m not suggesting that we all rush out to the nearest haberdashery store, go mad with our sewing machines and put our fave labels out of business. But, if you ever feel the need to abstain from buying a divine designer dress, even if that is once in a blue moon, then channel your inner designer and get creative.
My pals at the London College of Fashion couldn’t agree more. The marketing manager down there Reid Aiton explained that we should even consider turning to our favourite fashionable celebrities for inspiration. Take Lady Gaga and La Roux for example. They both have fabulous design sense – and you get the impression that it comes from themselves and not some stuffy, overpaid stylist!
"[Celebs] are incredibly unique and if people choose to copy them, then yes they have to make shop-bought items different or create something from scratch," he pointed out.
You may not be a wizard on the machine, so start out small by changing things like buttons and adding different trimmings to items. But a word of caution: the idea is to be eclectic, to mix and match.
Customise a fabulous jacket by adding shoulder pads and removing boring buttons, but add a splash of classic chic with a pair of designer skinny jeans and skyscraper heels.
Would you be willing to flex your creativity and become a designer for the day?
